Repetition chapter II - Natural landscapes

Slide 1 - Slide

Good morning!
Next week: test chapter II
Today: repetition

We'll go through all different landscapes step by step
With each landscape comes a certain location + video clip

Let's go!

Slide 2 - Slide

Let's start at the beginning
Which in the book isn't the beginning actually...
Paragraph 6: page 40-41

Remember the difference between weather and climate?
Please explain this on paper (3 minutes)
Keep this note for next week's test!

Climate
Consists mainly of 2 elements:
temperature & precipitation

The climate of a certain place on earth will tell you a lot about the natural landscape

Slide 5 - Slide

Natural landscapes
High temperature + high precipitation = ?
Low temperature + low precipitation = ?
High temperature + low precipitation = ?
Medium temperature + medium precipitation = ?

Slide 6 - Slide

Human population
In which landscapes can we expect a high population concentration? Why? And where would it be low? Why?

In which landscape can we find the most man-made elements? And where would we find the most natural-made ones?

Slide 7 - Slide

Tropical rainforest
  1. They're in the tropics. The tropics are close to the equator, between 23.5 degrees northern and southern latitude. Temperature is 25-30 degrees celcius year round + around 2000 mm of rainfall a year
  2. Rain forests are heterogeneous forests
  3. Vegetation (plants) grow in different layers
  4. Plants and trees are green year round

What can we tell about..
..temperature, precipitation & population density?

Slide 12 - Slide

Up North
Within the tundra landscape:

the temperature's never higher than 10 degrees C
there are no trees, just small plants
winter lasts for 9 months a year
you have permafrost - ever lasting frost

Slide 13 - Slide

The North Pole
Further up North, in the heart of the polar region:

the temperature never rises above 0 degrees C
there are no plants at all - just snow
land and sea ice can form

Slide 18 - Slide

Mountain landscape
Down in the valleys: more man-made or natural-made elements? Why?
High up in the mountains: more man-made or natural-made elements? Why?

Who can explain what an altitude belt is again?

The higher you go, the ... it gets

Slide 23 - Slide

Desert - characteristics
Less than 200 mm of rainfall a year
Rain pours down in 1 or 2 heavy storms a year
Huge difference in temperature between day and night
Very few plants and animals
Very low population density
Found around 30 degrees latitude north and south

Slide 24 - Slide

Steppes - characteristics
400 mm of rainfall a year
9 months of no rain at all a year
No trees, just grasses and shrubs
Low population density
Typically found on the edges of the desert: therefore often called semi-deserts

That was a lot!
The rest of the time you'll spend on:
- checking homework (if not done already)
- making a summary of chapter II
- asking questions!
- preparing for next week's test in any other way

Slide 30 - Slide

See you next week!
