Reported speech - questions

Reported questions are not real questions so they do not need question marks.

- ‘Do you like rap music?’ ↠ She asked me if I liked rap music.

• When there is no question word (who, what, how, why, etc.), we use if or whether.

‘Can you do it?’ ↠ They asked me if I could do it.

Reported questions 

Direct question: "When are you going on holiday?"

Reported question: She asked when I was going on holiday.

Direct:"Are you related?"

Reported: He asked if/whether we were related.

Direct: "Who is that man?"

Reported: She asked who the man was.

How old are you?
Reported speech of this question is ...

1. He asked how old was I
2. He asked how old are you
3. He asked how old I was
4. He asked how old am I

Can I get you a drink? In reported speech = The waiter asked......

1. if he can get me a drink
2. if he could get me a drink
3. if he a drink could get me
4. if could he get me a drink

‘Can you speak English?’ Marion asked the boy.

Turn the question into a reported question

Imperatives are:

Commands: Keep quiet!

Requests: Please close the window

Advice: Go and lie down

Suggestions: Take the test next year instead

This is the structure that we use:

Reported Speech Imperatives

Structure: reporting verb (e.g. ask, tell) + noun/pronoun + to infinitive

Example: She asked me to come later

"Pay attention" in reported speech =
