Modal verbs 
Modal verbs (modale werkwoorden) zijn hulpwerkwoorden die je extra betekenis geven over het hoofdwerkwoord in de zin. 

De modal verbs zijn:
Can, could, may, should, must, have to, might & may.

How to use: can 
We gebruiken 'can' wanneer we het hebben over regels die andere mensen ons hebben opgelegd. Je geeft aan of iets mogelijk is/toegelaten is.

- I can't move my arm, because it's broken.

  • We gebruiken have to wanneer we iets moeten doen, dus wanneer het verplicht of nodig is. 
  • We gebruiken don't have to wanneer iets niet nodig/verplicht is. 

I have to wear glasses in order to read. 
You don't have to go home straight after school.

Must heeft bijna dezelfde betekenis als have to, maar we gebruiken vaker have to. 

LET OP: negatieve vorm van must = mustn't (iets wat je niet mag doen). 
- You mustn't leave litter lying around.
