What to expect in the FCE Speaking exam
It is 20 minutes long
  • You do the speaking exam in pairs
  • There are two examiners in the room, one gives you instructions and asks you questions, the other just listens and takes notes
  • The speaking exam has four parts
TODAY WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT PART 2

Slide 2 - Slide

Part 2 - In Part 2 you work alone
  • The examiner gives you two photos on the same topic to speak about.
  • He/she asks you to speak for one minute, compare the photos and answer a question about the topic of the photos.
  • The question is also printed above the photos.
  • When your partner speaks about his/her photos,
you should listen carefully as you have to answer
    a question about them, too.

How to do Part 2
  • Compare the ideas the two photos show in relation to the question.  Say what is the same and what is different. Use the word both to describe similarities; use the words whereas and while to describe differences.
  • When you are not sure what is happening in a photo, speculate
    He might/may/could be (ww-ing).
She seems to be (ww-ing), It looks as if / as though...
Maybe, perhaps, it is possible/ (very) (un)likely  that...

Slide 4 - Slide

Write two sentences about these photos and use the words 'both' and 'whereas' or 'while'.

Slide 5 - Open question

Comparing the photos

1 minute per candidate
  • In the first photo, there is a young family who are on a ski-ing holiday whereas,  in the second photo a group of friends are enjoying a meal outside.
  • Discuss photo one
  • Discuss photo two
  • Discuss both: The people are probably enjoying getting together and that is usually fun. However,....... Whereas, .........
What are the people enjoying about doing these activities in their free time?

what's the same and what's different

Speculating language

In the first photo I see a family who look as if .........

Everyone seems to be very excited perhaps because they have just arrived at the top of the mountain.....
I think the girl might be holding a lunch party with friends, it could be  two sisters and  their boyfriends.

On the other hand they could be on holiday and having a meal in the garden of their hotel, maybe the girl in the red dress is a waitress.
