  • “A belief that states nothing is known or can be known of the existence of or nature of God.”
  • An agnost claims neither faith nor disbelief in God(s)
  • On basis of 'estimation'  of own knowledge

  • Related to ech other, creating 4 sub-categories
  • Belief-component of atheism ('I do believe' vs. 'I don't believe')
  • Knowledge-component of agnosticism ('I know' vs. 'I don't know'

Confusion of atheism / agnosticism

  • Vague distinction --> confusion and stigma
  • religious people: atheists are people that say there are no Gods or: don’t believe in anything
  • Not true: atheists simply don’t believe there is a God
  • Stigmatisation --> outcasts and false statistics
  • Most people in USA: agnostic atheists, meaning:
  • Not knowing whether there is a God, therefore not believing there is a God

  • Discrimination on the basis of religious belief extends to all beliefs about religion
  • Normally considered as the absence, rejection or opposite of religion
