Prepositions

Prepositions (voorzetsels) zijn woorden zoals on, in, at, for, from, into, between, after.

Ze worden veel gebruikt in het Engels.

Hetzelfde geldt voor het Nederlands. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan: bij, van, aan, voor, met, in, op.

Prepositions

Het Engels bevat veel voorzetsels. 

Vele ervan hebben meerdere betekenissen, zoals at:

• Don’t shout at me! (tegen)
  
• I’ll see you at seven o’clock. (om)
  
• I saw him at the railway station. (op)
  
• I met her at the bus stop. (bij)
  
• I’m really good at this. (in)

Prepositions

Een aantal voorzetsels is makkelijker te onthouden als je ze aan een thema koppelt:

• Tijd
• Plaats
• Beweging
• Uitdrukkingen en werkwoorden met een vast voorzetsel

Tijd en plaats hebben regels.

Beweging en uitdrukkingen kan je alleen uit je hoofd leren.

Prepositions of movement

A few examples:

• Let’s walk through this tunnel. (door)
• Our family moved to Belgium in 2010. (naar)
• We drove from Glasgow to Edinburgh. (van … naar)
• I walked past a small, medieval church. (langs)
• I saw them walk out of the building. (uit)
• We skated across the lake. (over)

Fixed prepositions 

A few examples:

• in my opinion (naar mijn mening)
• at the same time (tegelijk, tegelijkertijd)
• in memory of (ter nagedachtenis aan)
• lack of (gebrek aan)
• need for (behoefte aan)
• with regard to (met betrekking tot)
• on average (gemiddeld)

Fixed prepositions 

A few examples:

• to look after (zorgen voor)
• to look at (kijken naar)
• to look for (zoeken naar)
• to suffer from (lijden aan)
• to be good at (goed zijn in)
• to be dependent on (afhankelijk zijn van)
• to be in favour of (de voorkeur geven aan)
