- Today we are going to revise relative clauses and the vocabulary of theme 3.

Recap: Relative clauses
  • What is a relative clause?
  • Een betrekkelijke bijzin -> extra informatie over iets of iemand
  • Met welke 3 woordjes beginnen relative clauses Meestal?
  • Who (personen), which (dieren en dingen) of that (personen, dieren en dingen)
  • Welke 2 soorten bijzinnen zijn er?
  • Defining relative clauses (onmisbaar), Non-defining relative clauses (misbaar, met komma's)

Defining relative clauses
Defining relative clauses:  onmisbare informatie
  • Staan in het midden/einde van de zin
  • Je gebruikt geen komma's!




He is the doctor who helped my grandmother.


This is the car which was involved in an accident.

Non-defining relative clauses
Non-defining relative clauses:  onbelangrijke informatie
  • Staan in het midden/einde van de zin
  • Begint en eindigt met een komma
  • Je mag GEEN that gebruiken





The Times, which is published in London, is a daily newspaper.

Relative pronouns weglaten
Je kan de betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden (who, which, that) weglaten als de zin voldoet aan de volgende eisen:
1. Het is een defining relative clauses
2. Het gaat om who, which of that
3. Er staat een voornaamwoord achter.
        Persoonlijk voornaamwoord
        Bezittelijk voornaamwoord
        Wederkerend voornaamwoord

Who en which staan soms met een voorzetsel. Die kan vooraan (formeel) of achteraan (informeel de bijzin staan)

VB. The owner, who the police had talked to, was afraid.
. The owner, to whom the police had talked, was afraid.

Which veranderd dan niet, maar who kan veranderen in whom

Whose geeft bezit aan. 
Je vertaalt het met van wie, wiens of waarvan.

VB. Marvin, whose bike was stolen, had to walk home.
