Heathens
During the early Middle Ages, a lot of people are heathens:
people that do not believe in Christ, but in nature gods. 
It is the job of missionaries to convert them to christianities.

Missionaries
Missionaries were people who travelled around to convert people to Christianity. 
They did this by celebrating christian holidays on the same days as heathen holidays. 
This way, it was easier to change to Christianity for a lot of people.
