Principles

of Engagement

Johan de Witt Scholengroep | CP1 & DP1 | 70 minutes

Bring your CE / CAS handbook and your S3 worksheet.

One of the many solutions

Before we start —

You have to do this.

Why does that matter?

Think for 30 seconds. Then share with the person next to you.

🎓 CE students

"Even though it's required — what

do you actually want to contribute?"

📚 CAS students

"Even though it's required — why

this activity, and not just any?"

Today's session — 70 minutes

0–5 min

🔙 Look back at S3

5–20 min

📖 Handbook hunt + draw your journey map (A3)

20–28 min

🖼 Gallery walk — read each other's maps

28–45 min

🗣️🔄🪞 Three principles — theory + add to your map

45–60 min

💬 Circle share — what changed?

60–70 min

📱 Exit ticket — Toddle

Look back | 0–5 min

One sentence — share in your circle

🎓 CE (CP)

Which community are you planning to engage with — and what will you do there?

📚 CAS (DP)

Which strand and what specific experience?

Keep your S3 worksheet on the table — you will use it alongside your handbook today.

📖 Open your handbook - see Somtoday

Step 1 — Find these two pages

CE handbook → "Three Stages" (Explore & Prepare / Act & Engage / Evaluate & Share)

CAS handbook → "Steps and Stages to CAS" and "CAS Learning Outcomes"

→ Next: draw your journey on A3 paper

✏️ Draw your CE / CAS journey

On your A3 paper — use your handbook as your guide

🎓 CE (CP)

  • 1. Draw a path with 3 stops: Explore & Prepare → Act & Engage → Evaluate & Share

  • 2. Write your community and idea next to the path

  • 3. Add the 4 CE Learning Outcomes (LO1–LO4) — mark which stage each one fits

  • 4. Mark where you are RIGHT NOW on the path

  • 5. Add one question you still have

📚 CAS (DP)

  • 1. Draw a path with 5 stops: Investigation → Preparation → Action → Reflection → Demonstration

  • 2. Write your strand(s) and experience next to the path

  • 3. Add the 7 CAS Learning Outcomes (LO1–LO7) — mark which stage each one fits

  • 4. Mark where you are RIGHT NOW on the path

  • 5. Add one question you still have

Example

Example

🖼 Gallery walk

Put your A3 on the wall.

1

Walk around and read at least 3 other maps.

2

Leave a sticky note on each one: one thing you recognise + one question.

3

Back at your own map: read the sticky notes. Notice what others spotted.

Keep your map on the wall — you will add to it after the principles.

Three questions — for everyone

These come from CE — and they apply to every CAS Service experience too.

🗣️ Dialogue

"Am I listening to the community before I decide what to do?"

CE LO1

CAS LO7 + LO5

🔄 Reciprocity

"Am I giving as much as I am taking from this relationship?"

CE all 4 LOs

CAS LO7 + LO4

🪞 Reflexivity

"How do my own assumptions and identity shape what I see?"

CE LO4

CAS LO1 + LO2 + LO7

🗣️ Dialogue

"Dialogue means creating the conditions for the community's voice to shape what happens."

❌ Engaging FOR

You decide what they need. You plan, they receive. No one asked.

✓ Engaging WITH

You visit first. You listen. Their answer shapes your plan — even when it surprises you.

✏️ Add to your map

  • CE: How will you find out what the community actually needs? Write one concrete first step on your map.

  • CAS: Who should you speak to before you start your Service? Write their name or role on your map.

  • Everyone: Draw a small ear 👂 on the stage where dialogue will happen most.

33–38 min

🔄 Reciprocity

"If only one side benefits, it is not community engagement. It is charity."

What YOU give

Time, skills, energy, presence — regularly.

What the COMMUNITY gives

Trust, time, space, knowledge, their story.

What YOU take

Learning, growth, LO evidence, a better understanding of the world.

What the COMMUNITY takes

A real contribution — not someone ticking a box.

✏️ Add to your map

  • CE: Write "What does the community gain?" next to your Act & Engage stage.

  • CAS: Write "What does the community gain?" next to your Action stage.

  • Everyone: Draw ⇄ between you and the community somewhere on your map.

🪞 Reflexivity

"Reflection looks outward at the experience. Reflexivity looks inward — at you."

1

What assumptions am I bringing? What do I already think about this community — and where does that image come from?

2

How does my identity shape this? Your background, language, education — what do you miss because of it?

3

Am I the right person to do this? Do you have the skills and relationships needed, or are you taking up space someone else should fill?

✏️ Add to your map

  • Write one assumption you are bringing — next to the stage where it matters most.

  • CE: Connect it to LO4 (reflexivity) on your map.

  • CAS: Connect it to LO7 (ethics) on your map.

  • Everyone: Put a small 🪞 on the stage where you will examine this assumption.

3

45–60 min

💬 Circle share — what changed?

Take your A3 off the wall. Sit in your circle.

1

Point to something new on your map that was not there before the principles.

2

Read out the sticky note question you found most useful — and answer it.

3

Which principle challenged your plan most — and what will you actually change?

Each person shares — 2–3 minutes per person.

60–70 min

📱 Exit ticket — open Toddle now

3 minutes. One specific sentence per question.

🎓 CE (CP)

1. Which principle challenged your plan most — and what will you change?

2. What is one concrete dialogue step you will take before your first visit?

3. Name one assumption you are bringing — link it to CE LO4.

📚 CAS (DP)

1. Which principle applies most to your Service experience — and why?

2. What will the community genuinely gain? Be specific.

3. Name one assumption you are bringing — link it to CAS LO7.

Next session (S5): Ethics & respectful collaboration.
