Gebruik van de genitive

De genitive wordt gebruikt om bezit aan te duiden:

Patrick’s family my mother's hands his father's eyes

People / animals

Om bezit aan te geven bij personen/ dieren gebruik je in principe een 's na het zelfstandige naamwoord:  

• Jack's car
• the dog's tail
• the man's bike

(N.B.: Jack his car/ the dog its tail mag niet!)

Single noun / not -s

Een 's geldt voor zelfstandige naamwoorden (personen/ dieren) die niet op en 's' eindigen:

• My sister's dress is nice.
• My brother's bike is new.

Single noun / -s

Als een naam of zelfstandig naamwoord eindigt op een s, dan zet je alleen een apostrof achter de bestaande 's' om bezit aan te geven:

• James' book
• Chris' car

N.B. Bij namen mag je ook 's gebruiken: James's book, maar is dit is minder gebruikelijk. 

 

Plural nouns / -s

Bij zelfstandige naamwoorden in het meervoud die eindigen op -s (= de meeste meervoudsvormen), komt er alleen een apostrof na de -s om bezit aan te geven:

• the boys' mother
• the girls' jackets

N.B. Bij meervoudsvormen die eindigen op -s mag je nooit een extra 's toevoegen: the boys's mother.

Plural nouns / not -s

Er bestaan in het Engels ook zelfst. nw. in het meervoud die niet eindigen op -s, zoals children, men, women, enz. De bezitsvorm bij deze meervoudsvormen is 's:

• the children's school
• the women's dresses

Things

Bij dingen gebruik je in principe 'of' en geen 's' om bezit aan te geven: 

• the door of the classroom
• the end of the journey

Je mag niet zeggen: the classroom's door of the journey's end.

Expressions of time 

Uitzondering: bij tijdsaanduidingen krijg je juist wel 's en geen 'of':

• a week's notice
• yesterday's newspaper
• an hour's drive

Shops / houses

Je gebruikt 's ook als aanduiding voor een plaats waar iemand woont of werkt. Meestal kun je er 'shop' of 'house' achter denken:

• I have to go to the baker's. (-> baker's shop)
  
• hairdresser's
• I'm staying at my friend's tonight. (-> friend's house)

Plural forms in general

Let op! Bij meervoudsvormen (dus zonder bezitsvorm) gebruik je nooit 's, maar je plakt de 's' altijd aan het woord vast:

• cats
• babies
• aunts
