What are “Parts of Speech”?

Parts of Speech are a categories that describe the role of each word in a sentence. These are eight main parts of speech:



Parts of Speech:

Nouns: Names a person, place, thing, or idea. Ex; cat, happiness, New York

Pronouns: Replaces a noun to avoid repetition. Ex; he, she, it, they

Verbs: Describes an action or state of being. Ex; run, think, is, seem

Adjectives: Describes or modifies a noun. Ex; beautiful, tall, blue

Adverbs: Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb, often indicating how, when, where, or to what. Ex; quickly, very, well, yesterday

Preposition: Shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence. Ex; in, on, under, before

Conjunction: Joins words, phrases, or clauses. Ex; and, but, or, because

Interjection: Expresses strong feelings or sudden emotions. Ex; oh, wow, ouch, hey

What are “nouns”?

A nouns is a word that is used to identify any class of people, places, or things (common noun), or to name a particular one of these (proper noun).


Examples: book – chair – pen - Ali – Mirna – Amr


Types of nouns:

Common nouns

Proper nouns

Concrete nouns

Abstract nouns

Collective nouns

Compound nouns

Types of nouns

Proper Nouns:

Specific names of people, places, or organizations, and are always capitalized.

Common Nouns:

General names for a person, place, thing, or idea.

Ex: Mr. Ahmad, Lily, Google, Real Madrid

Ex: teacher, city, happiness, song

Types of nouns:

Compound nouns

Nouns made up of two or more words. They can be written as one word, separate words, or hyphenated words.

Collective nouns:

Nouns that refer to a group of people, animals, or things considered as a single unit.

Ex: Toothpaste, basketball, mother-in-law
