Gerunds
  • gerund =  a verb that is used as a noun (znw)
  • gerunds always end in - ing

Parking in London is very expensive.
I love watching movies on Netflix.

Plek in de zin
Een gerund is vaak het onderwerp (subject), lijdend of meewerkend voorwerp (object) in de zin. 
Often used after:
to like/dislike/enjoy/prefer
to love/hate/mind
to miss
to avoid

Let op:
Als er een vorm van to be voor het ww+ing staat is het GEEN gerund maar een vorm van de continuous:

We are doing our homework (=present continuous)
I don't like doing my homework (=gerund)

Soms moet of kun je in plaats van de gerund ook to + hele werkwoord gebruiken.

Je kunt het gebruiken als object:
Dana hopes to pass her exams this year. 
We decided to go on holiday this summer.

It can also be used after the object:

I invited some friends to come over.

  • to demand/ forbid/ prohibit/ allow/ restrict (bevel)
