  • In Eastern Europe, the SU was always the obvious leader 
  • It was the protector of communism and wouldn't accept countries opting for democracy/capitalism
  • In fact, the SU had the Breznjevdoctrine
  • Theory - It said: communist countries can stop any country from giving up communism
  • Practice - The Warsaw Pact had invaded countries in the previous decennia.
