The Communist Party started reforming the economy during the civil war

Belonging to the state

• Lenin made the state take over banks and factories             Nationalisation 
• The government also took control of farmland             Farmers had to give a lot of their crops to the state

Taking a privately owned business into state ownership.

Problems

• The nationalized companies didn't make as much money as expected
  
• Farmers didn't want to cooperate with the new rules
  
• This resulted in famine.
• Lenin had to reverse his measures to a certain extent

1924: Lenin dies

Stalin in power

• Stalin introduced a "planned economy" in 1928
•  Stalin's government made plans for what should be produced over 5 years
• Focus was on heavy industry like coal, oil, and machinery. Consumer goods were considered less important
