Traditionally, the Mongols were nomadic herders, often in conflict with each other. 

Leader Genghis Khan united the Mongols and expanded the Empire very easy:
  • Mongols were very good horsemen
  • There were few rivals 

The expansion of the Empire led to new trade routes with Europe: the Silk Road
