    I COULDN'T STOP SHOPLIFTING
    A girl's own story
Jane started shoplifting when she was 12, thinking it'd impress people. As she got more into it, she didn't stop to consider the consequences of getting caught...

    I COULDN'T STOP SHOPLIFTING
My problems started when I was 12 - Mum and Dad split up and Dad went to live with his new girlfriend miles away. If that wasn't bad enought, we had to sell the house (Dad wanted half the money) and Mum and I moved to another town where I started a new school.

    I COULDN'T STOP SHOPLIFTING
It was the beginning of the second year and everyone had their own mates. It was afwul, I felt so lonely. After school and at weekends, I used to go up to the amusement arcade by myself and hang out there. That's where I met Tracey.

    I COULDN'T STOP SHOPLIFTING
She was 15 and a bit of a rebel, something of a school celebrity. I was chuffed she wanted to be friends with me. We'd gossip about the boys playing on the machines or hang out with her friends in the café.

    I COULDN'T STOP SHOPLIFTING
    Shock tactics
A few weeks after we first made friends we went shopping together for her mum's birthday present. I remember flicking through some records and looking up to see her pick up a CD and stick it into her carrier bag. My jaw must've dropped - I was so shocked, I couldn't get out fast enought.

    Slide 13 - Slide

    I COULDN'T STOP SHOPLIFTING
I knew it wasn't right, but I didn't want to lose the only friend I had. So, in the next shop, I picked up a bottle of perfume and slipped it into my pocket. It was really easy, but I was convinced someone was going to catch me. As I walked towards the door I had this knot of fear in my stomach, but the second I got outside I felt sky high!
