You don’t know where Columbus got his gifts: It is maybe a bit strange the Indians brought them to strangers on the beach. In the background you see Indians running away - they seem afraid. You don’t know if that is true either. 

The explorers also wanted to spread the Christian religion. In the source you can see the sailors erecting a cross, the symbol of Christianity.

Exercise 8 b

Vasco da Gama was exploring a sea route to Asia traveling east, and he already knew half of the way thanks to Bartolomeo Dias. He had additional help from an experienced Indian sailor. Columbus wanted to sail to Asia by finding a western route over the Atlantic. He had no help on his trip, nobody had taken this route before.
