Getting started
2 minutes
  1. How are you?
  2. How is your energy?
  3. Anything excited that happened?

How to give a presentation
A good presentation is structured.

This means it follows certain steps.

We are going to look at the structures and some useful sentences for those steps

Slide 3 - Slide

The structures
A presentation follows 3 main steps:
The opening
The main part
The conclusion

Slide 4 - Slide

The opening
Important things to mention in your opening:
Your own introduction (who you are)
Introduction of your topics (what are you going to talk about and when)
A few main points of your topics.

Slide 5 - Slide

Example
Hello , everyone, I am Lesley and today I will talk to you about how to give a well structured presentation in English.
I will start by giving an overview of how a presentation can be structured.
Then I will discuss each structure in depth and I will offer some useful key-phrases.
At the end I will discuss the pro's and con's of having a structured presentation.
The whole presentation will take around twenty minutes.

Slide 6 - Slide

Tips
A presentation should have a logical structure.
Start at the beginning and end at the end.

When speaking about aviation you should, for example, first explain what aircraft you will discuss, then how it is build and at the end how it is better/worse then other aircraft and why.

People then understand what the aircraft is, have some knowledge about how it's build and can then understand and compare it to other aircraft.

Slide 7 - Slide

Keyphrases
Hello, my name is ... and today I will talk about ..
Goodmorning/afternoon/evening, Today I will discuss...

Hello and thank you for taking the time to listen to me, Today I will explain why....

Slide 8 - Slide

Keyphrases
I will start by/Firstly/in the beginning I will be talking a little about this aircraft and it's history
Then/after that/following that/Secondly I will discuss it's design and certain key parts of it's construction.
At the end/In the end/lastly I will compare it to other aircraft and talk about/discuss/focus on it's pro's and con's/strengths and weaknesses etc.

Slide 9 - Slide

Tips
Usually during a presentation you also set aside some time for questions at the end, so you will not be disturbed during your talk.
Something along the lines of "After my presentation there will be around five minutes for questions"
"Please hold you questions until after the presentation."

Slide 10 - Slide

Excercise
Take 3 minutes to write the start of your presentation
things to discuss:
  • Welcoming/introduction
  • What will you talk about
  • When will you talk about it
  • When will you take questions

Slide 11 - Slide

Intro
You have 2 minutes to present your introduction.

I will give you feedback (then you can use it as a format for your presentation)

Slide 12 - Slide

Main part
The main part of your presentation is where you give information about your subject

It is the most important part of your presentation as your conclusion rests on the information you give.

Slide 13 - Slide

Tips
Usually you start by writing your main part and choosing the different topics you will discuss, you can then add this into your intro.
Make sure that you write down your topics first and then start on the details
Make sure that the details you provide are relevant to your conclusion.

Slide 14 - Slide

For example
If your conclusion is that aircraft A is better suited for a certain job than aircraft B, it has very little relevance to discuss in depth the complete history of aircraft A.
You need to give more time to the construction and current use of aircraft A.

Slide 15 - Slide

Tips
The order of your main topics must also be logical

You cannot discuss the functions of Aircraft A and B before you have discussed Aircraft A and B's construction (for example)

Slide 16 - Slide

Keyphrases to introduce a topic
To set the scene I will discuss a little about the history of Aircraft A
First, I will start by explaining the history of Aircraft A, before moving on to ....
I would like to start by discussing ....

Slide 17 - Slide

Keyphrases to shift topic
I would like to shift focus to the construction process of Aircraft A....

Next we need to consider that Aircraft A has this and this function, build because of such and such reasons.

For your reference aircraft A has performed remarkably well in such and such conditions, unlike aircraft B which has performed worse.

Slide 18 - Slide

Excercise 2
You have 2 minutes to write down the topics you would like to discuss
For example:
  • History of Aircraft A
  • Construction of Aircraft A
  • Performance of Aircraft A in different conditions

Slide 19 - Slide

Tips
To find relevant details use the five W's
Who, what, why , when and (for) what purpose

How is also a good question

Slide 20 - Slide

Excercise 3
You have 5 minutes to write down the details you want to discuss in the different topics
For example:
History of aircraft A
* Who designed it
* When was it designed
* For what purpose was it designed

Slide 21 - Slide

Discuss
We will take 5 minutes to discuss the topics you chose, their order and their details.

When we're finished you can use this as a template too!

Slide 22 - Slide

The end
In the last part of your presentation you must come with a conclusion
this can be an opinion  (reviewing these facts, I believe that..)
This can be a fact (As I have shown in this presentation, it is clear that...)
This can be a question (So if we look to this information, it is unclear if...)
This can also be a summary (So, to summarise ...)

Slide 23 - Slide

Keyphrases Opinion
Reviewing the information I laid out for you, I believe strongly that...
So , based on these facts I would say that...
Based on the information we discussed, In my opinion ....

Slide 24 - Slide

Keyphrases facts
So based on this presentation, we may assume that
According to such and such research....
In light of this information,

Slide 25 - Slide

Keyphrases Questions
Based on this information, it is still unknown

According to these facts it is still unclear if...

Based only on these facts we cannot with certainty say that

Slide 26 - Slide

Keyphrases Summary
“To summarise…”
“In conclusion…”
“I would like to recap…”
“To sum up what has been said…”
“So, we have covered…”

Slide 27 - Slide

Note
For a summary:
Tip: go through your topics with the main point:

To summarise, aircraft A was designed in 1942 with the purpose of .., It was constructed in such and such way and later it performed well in these conditions.

Slide 28 - Slide

Excercise 4
You have 1 minute to decide what kind of ending you want to have.

Tip: a summary is, for a school project, usually the easiest.

Slide 29 - Slide

Excercise 5
You have 5 minutes to write your ending with the keyphrases I gave.

Slide 30 - Slide

Excercise 6
You will have 2 minutes to present your ending , and I will give feedback.

After that, you can present your entire presentation :)
