Relative Clauses

Een "relative clause" is een gedeelte van een zin dat extra informatie geeft.

Which man?

The man who is wearing a red vest has a  cricket bat.

The man who has a white flower has his hand in his pocket.

- The man is wearing a red vest

- The man has a cricket bat

The man who is wearing a red vest has a cricket bat.

Dus:

Bij een betrekkelijke bijzin (relative clause) worden twee zinnen over hetzelfde onderwerp aan elkaar geplakt.

The man who has a white flower has his hand in his pocket.

The car which was broken into was very expensive.

I have tickets for Ajax - VVV, which will be a great game.

Relative pronouns

• who bij personen
• whose bij bezit
  
• which bij dieren en dingen
  
• that (informeel) bij dieren en dingen. Liever niet bij mensen.
  

Some examples:

The thief who robbed a bank was sent to jail

The cat which was reported missing was found.

The car that broke the sound barrier blew up.

A person whose house is on fire should call 911.

Maar niet: The man which did a backflip landed perfectly.

Let op:

Bijzin tussen komma's alleen who of which

• The bike, which was bright green, fell into the river.
• Dus niet: The bike, that fell into the river, was bright green.
  

Let op:

Als de bijzin nodig is om te begrijpen over wie of wat het gaat, kun je who, which of that vaak weglaten.

• This is the suspect (who) the police arrested yesterday.
• This is the suspect the police arrested yesterday.
  

Let op:

Als er een voorzetsel voor who staat, wordt het whom.

• The owner who the police had talked to was afraid
• The owner, to whom the police had talked, was afraid.
