The rules
A grammatical structure you use to talk about things and actions that:
  • have taken place in the past
  • and are over and done.

Examples
When I was sixteen, I looked like James Dean.
Yesterday I travelled by bus.
Last year we went to Spain to visit my aunt.

You use the past simple to talk about things and actions that:

are going to happen
B
are happening
C
happened in the past and are still happening
D
happened in the past and are over and done

The forms
You can use verbs in 3 forms:
Affirmative --> something is true
Negative     --> something is NOT true
Question     --> you aks if something is true or not

Example
Affirmative --> I worked for a telephone company.
Negative --> I did not work for a telephone company.
Question --> Did I work for a telephone company?

The form: affirmative
You take the verb, and put             (ed) next to it:
work + ed = worked
play + ed = played
But:
go + ed = goed (incorrect)
irregular verb go = went (past simple)

You need two things:
  1. did
  2. not

The form: negative
  1. You take the two things (did + not) and put them in front of the verb.
  2. You remove           from the verb.

  2. I did not work for a telephone company.

You need only 1 of the 2 things:
  1. did

  1. You take the one thing (did) and you put it at the beginning of the sentence.
  2. You remove            from the verb.
