Relative pronouns

Slide 1 - Slide

What is a relative pronoun?
  • In het Nederlands noemen we dit een betrekkelijk voornaamwoord
  • Een relative pronoun verwijst altijd terug naar het woord/zinsdeel dat ervoor staat, dit noemen we het 'antecedent'
  • Het relative pronoun en het zinsdeel dat daarna volgt noemen we de 'relative clause' (betrekkelijke bijzin)

This is the man who helped me.

  • 'the man' = antecedent
  • 'who' = betrekkelijk voornaamwoord
  • 'who helped me' = betrekkelijke bijzin

who / whom / whose / which / that / where / when / why

This is the girl who helped me (antecedent = zelfstandig naamwoord)

The match was won by Liverpool, which I really liked (antecedent = zinsdeel)

  • WHO = Personen (This is the girl who helped me)
  • WHICH = Dieren / Dingen / Zinsdeel (This is the house which he built)
  • THAT = Dieren / Dingen / Personen (The cat that scratched me)

  • WHOSE = Bezit van personen en dingen (The man whose car had been stolen) - Na 'whose' volgt er altijd een zelfstandig naamwoord

  • WHEN = Tijd (The day when I met him)
  • WHERE =  Plaats (This is the café where I was waiting for him)
  • WHY = Reden (The reason why we met him)

  • Als who het onderwerp is in de bijzin dan gebruik je gewoon ‘who’
That is the man who helped me

• Als who het lijdend voorwerp/meewerkend voorwerp is in de bijzin dan gebruik je 'whom'

This is the girl (to) whom I gave the flowers
