Ionic Bonds (compounds)
Properties of Ionic Bonds
  • Made of charged ions
  • e- transfer between  Metals and Nonmetals
  • When compound is formed, the overall charge is ZERO.

  • Exothermic Reaction -       Exo=out  Thermic=heat. Heat is released during this reaction.
  • Conduct electricity when melted or dissolved
  • Brittle
  • High Boiling / Melting Point

Slide 3 - Slide

Properties of Covalent Bonds
  • Sharing of e- between atoms
  • No charges
  • Bonds between                 Nonmetals and Nonmetals Nonmetals and Metalloids
  • Weaker bonds than Ionic Bond

  • Will NOT conduct electricity
  • Mostly in Liquid & Gas state
  • When a solid it is a soft solids
  • Low boiling & melting Point

CER: How can you distinguish between the physical properties of covalent or ionic bonds?

Use what you have learned to complete the CER on the back of the Lab Sheet.
When you are done, place the Lab Sheet in the correct Block Basket.
