Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs (hulpwerkwoorden).

You use can to talk about:
  • what is possible
  • what people, animals and things can do.
  • ask for permission.

Examples
- Stress can cause health problems.
- You cannot come into my room.
- Can you ride a bicycle?

Examples

Should/have to

You use should to talk about advice:
- You should eat something.
- Shoud we leave early?

You use have to to talk about obligations: there is no choice but to do it.
- We have to fill out this form first.
You can use not with have to to say there is no obligations: there is a choice.
- She does not have to be a member to joun this workshop.
