How to make blackout poetry
  • pick a page (copies at the front of the class, take a new one if one doesn't work)
  • scan the page, don't read it!
  • pick a word that stands out to you, this will be your anchor word, and will guide what the poem is about.
  • use a pencil to circle words or groups of words that could work with your anchor word, you can read the page now.
  • Choose the final words, circle them or parts of them, blackout the rest and/or decorate.

Create a blackout poem from a page of The Lottery!
  • You don't have to blackout everything!
  • You can use guidelines if you don't want to use the words in order from top to bottom, left to right (see examples)
  • Sometimes a page just doesn't work, pick a new one.
