Introduction

Part of the Summer Safety series, in this session children will look at some basic first aid techniques.

We have designed our Summer Safety lessons so that teachers can pick up and teach a topic to their class with confidence.

We have chosen to use a balance of interactive tools and 'unplugged' creative activities.

Lessons can be taught directly from the LessonUp slides but work best when children have access to the pupil app

Summer Safety

This lesson can be used a a stand alone activity or as part of your school's PSHE curriculum.

By the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

• understand the importance of
   first aid respond to common
   summer-related injuries

• practice basic first
   aid techniques.

When might you need to give or receive first aid?

First aid can save a life or reduce the severity of

an injury.

Explain the importance of first aid and give examples of situations where it can make a difference.

Cuts, burns,

and insect bites are common injuries during the summer.

Introduce the most common summer-related injuries and explain why they are more likely to happen during the summer.

Clean the cut 

with water, apply pressure to stop the bleeding, 

and cover with

a bandage.

Explain the steps to respond to a cut and demonstrate how to properly clean and bandage a cut.

Bandage your partner's arm

and then upload a picture.

Start cooling the burn or scald as quickly as possible. Hold it under cool running water for at least 20 minutes or until the pain feels better.

Explain the steps to respond to a burn and demonstrate how to properly cool and cover a burn.

To treat a sting or insect bite

With clean hands, carefully remove the stinger (if there is one), wash the affected area and apply a cold compress.
