What are conditionals?
  • A sentence that is made up of an if-clause (condition) and a main clause (result) 
  • We also call them 'if sentences'
  • Describe situations that might happen or might have happened
  • There are 4 types of conditionals and they are made using different English verb tenses.

The Zero Conditional:

  • Real factual situations
  • (if + present simple, ... present simple)
  • e.g. If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
  • If it rains

  • possible future action

  • unreal, improbable situations
  • (if + past simple, .... would + infinitive)
