The feudal system

  • The Franks had a warrior culture: fighting leads to honor, respect and power

  • Clovis (466-511) becomes king after defeating other Frankish lords --> after his baptism he is a Christian.

  • Charlemagne (742-814) is the most important king; he is crowned emperor (imperator) by the pope

Charlemagne needed help to govern all this land

But he had a problem:

  • People did not use money to pay for things

  • How would you solve that?
