2 different beliefs

Protestant

(There is a third current around the world: Eastern Orthodox,
as in Syria, Armenia, Greece, Russia, etc.)

Priest/Cardinals (not allowed to marry = celibacy)

Protestants
Local churches and their members jointly determine what is important in the church: The Bible is leading.
Two sacraments (baptism and eucharisty)
Churches are less decorated.
Ministers (including women) are allowed to marry.

Slide 24 - Slide

ICHTUS fish, meaning:
In the Early Church (the first centuries AD), there was severe persecution of Christians. To still be able to meet each other and know who they were dealing with, Christians drew the little fish in the sand with their shoe.

ICHTUS = Greek for 'fish,' but each letter has a meaning:
Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior
Iesou Christou, Theos (h)uios, Soter

Christian holidays
  • Christmas (birth of Jesus)
  • Good Friday / Easter (death and resurrection of Jesus)
  • Ascension (return to heaven of Jesus)
  • Pentecost (coming of the Holy Spirit of God)

Slide 26 - Slide

extra: in the Netherlands we still have quite a lot of traditions based on Christianity!
January 6: Epiphany: Three wise men came from the East to worship the baby Jesus.
In the Netherlands, this is the day to take down the Christmas tree.

Good Friday / Easter:
The first Sunday after the full moon in spring, so after March 21st.
That's why Easter falls on a different date each year (unlike Christmas, which is always December 25th-26th).
Lent falls 40 days before Easter.

The days before that are Carnival, Friday through Wednesday.
On the Wednesday after Carnival, you collect your ash cross in church, and Lent begins.

This is how we determine when Carnival is celebrated and when spring break falls in our country.
40 days after Easter = Ascension Day
50 days after Easter = Pentecost (Pentacoste = 50)
