Most nations in the 17th century were monarchies​

• What are those?​
• In the Early Middle Ages (500-1000) kings usually didn't have a lot of power​
• How did they rule?

Since the Late Middle Ages kings tried to decrease the power of the nobles (and increase their own)​

• With the rise of cities and trade came more money --> taxes
• Soldiers --> power​
• Government officials --> to help the king govern (laws)
