Your turn
Think of problems we as humanity face. List them and pick one you want to focus on.
Do research: What is the problem?
Who has the problem?
How big is the problem?
What solutions are out there already?

Slide 9 - Slide

With your group you decide on taking one tiny bit of the huge problem.
e.g. Overpopulation.
What is the problem with overpopulation?
scarcity of food ? living space ?oxigen? inequality?
Again decide with the group what to choose.

With your group you decided on one of the SDG
The SDG is a theme. A very broad scope that you have to narrow down. For example: 15, life on land. That deals with biodiversity. Deforestation. Overpopulation. Food production. That is way too much to deal with, so you have to focus on a small part of the theme.

Slide 10 - Slide

Once you decided on the topic you are going to do research.
Start with gathering information. Try to work together and not all doing the same thing, so devide the tasks: Make five or six questions and all take one question to provide info for
  • Store the info you found in a central place (drive)
  • Highlight the important parts in articles you found
  • stick to the topic.
  • Pictures can be a good source of information.
  • People can be a good source of information.
  • Verify your sources. Are they reliable?

Slide 11 - Slide

Last week you started a website. With your group look at the sites and pick one. This is the site that you are going to maintain during this project.
Appoint a webmaster in your team.
  • Upload on the site a description of the theme and what it is about according to your team
  • Upload a resume of the information that is relevant to the topic.
  • Upload a factsheet: How big is the problem? Who has the problem.
  • Upload a prediction. What will happen if the problem is not solved.
  • Upload pictures illustrating the problem.
  • Upload a source file. Where did you find what.

Slide 12 - Slide

Slide 13 - Slide

Brief
By now you are experts on your topic and you have fenced it off somewhat.
Now you should define, briefly describe, what exactly it is that you are going to research.
e.g. Our group is going to look at how we can provide sustainable housing for rapidly growing metropoles.
(upload your brief on the site)

Slide 14 - Slide

analysis
List as many questions as possible linked to your brief.
  • e.g. what is a metropole
  • where are they
  • how do you get fresh food inside a metropole.
  • do people have swift acces to healthcare?
  • et cetera

Slide 15 - Slide

research
Find answers to the questions stated in the analyses.

Slide 16 - Slide

specification
Define the focus of your group.
the focus is a tiny part of the huge problem. Limit it down.
e.g.
how can we provide fresh air for people and animals in metropoles?

Slide 17 - Slide

Slide 18 - Slide

Generating ideas
You did one excersise: the reverse brainstorm; Producing bad ideas than flipping them into solutions.
Try to make sketches of ten possible solutions for the problem of your team. ( No talking) After 15 minutes give them to a team member who is going to improve the idea on the drawing. (without you explaining it) When you find this hard: change the hat you are wearing.

Slide 19 - Slide

design development
  • Collect all ideas from your team and make a choice for the one that is most promising and worth developing.
  • Archive the rest of the ideas and present them on the site.
  • Come up with a title for your team idea.
  • Design a logo for your team.
  • Do you have all facts or do you need further research?
  • Can you start doing experiments or modelling?

Slide 20 - Slide

Planning
  • You need to have a presentation online in November.
  • The presentation needs to be chrystal clear for professionals but also for a non professional audience.
  • You present the problem (what happens if we dont solve it), the part of the problem the group focusses on, the target audience (who benefits firstly by this solution), the spin-off(what side effects does your solution bring )
  • website with process, mood boards, 3d models, pictures, animations...

Slide 21 - Slide

Evaluation
  • Put on your black hat and take a critical look at your work.
  • Take a look at former winners of the competition. Is your work up to the standard?
  • mobilise your networks to vote for your idea.
  • Can you improve on the idea/presentation
  • What if you reach the finals? How are you going to showcase your solution.

Slide 26 - Video

November 17th your project needs to be ready.
You have to hand in a digital presentation of your group work.

A digital presentation on a website of your contribution to the groupwork. On the following slides is listed what the minimum is you need to hand in.

Slide 27 - Slide

Groupwork: Your audience is a group of engineers.
They will look at quality of the idea and quality of the artwork.(drawings etc.)

Explanation of the problem. What is the problem Why is it a problem, to whom is it a problem. What tiny part of the problem did you solve?
Presentation of your idea. You can do this with a video, drawings, a rap, pictures of models you made; anything goes. Make it convincingly and fun to see for the jury.
With your idea you possibly solved some other ideas in the slipstream, dont forget to mention those.
Proof that your group worked according to the design process steps.(slide 13)

Mind you this jury sees at least 144 presentations yours needs to jump out  and stick to their minds.

Slide 28 - Slide

Personal work
On your personal website ( wordpress only for those have messed up the login Weebly)
The moodboards you made.
The drawing you made with the addition of one of your classmates
A personal evaluation(prox 300 words)of your contribution to the group effort: in the design process everybody can play a role, generating ideas, reseaching, testing moddeling, cooking, filming, singing ....
What did you do to help the team ?
What was your role in the team?
What were you good at? did you know that before?
What did you learn about group dynamics?
How would you go about working in a group next time ?

Personally I took notes of your contribution to the group effort. Please provide me with a thoughtful evaluation of your input. Making up a story is of no use at all
