Much and Many

= saying how much of something there is.

There are many chairs around the table. 

She doesn't have much money left after she bought that iPhone.

We don't have many more days of school this term.

I'd like to have many different pairs of shoes. 

Wanneer gebruik je many?

Je gebruikt many bij countable nouns: telbare zelfstandig naamwoorden. 

 Ze hebben een enkelvoudsvorm en meervoudsvorm.

 For example: apple, car, dollar, loaf, stamps, chair, book, job.

There are many apples on the table. 

Rich people usually own many cars. 

The bakery bakes many loaves of bread every morning.

My grandfather has collected many stamps.

Wanneer gebruik je much?

Je gebruikt much bij uncountable nouns: zelfstandige naamwoorden die je niet in het meervoud kan zetten en die je dus niet kan tellen (ontelbare zelfstandig naamwoorden)

For example: water, money, salt, bread, work, help, news, information, milk.

How much money have you got?

The recipe doesn’t need much milk.

The homework today isn't much work.

They don't need much help to understand the grammar.

There is much information on the website. 

SOME • when to use it? 

1. In bevestigende / positieve zinnen

   We bought some flowers

2. In een vraag als je verwacht dat het 

   antwoord "ja" is

   Can I have some water please?

3. Bij een aanbod of verzoek

   Would you like some tea?

   

    

 

ANY • when to use it?

1. In ontkennende / negatieve zinnen

2. In vraagzinnen - waarvan het antwoord 

     nog niet zeker is

We didn't buy any flowers.

They arrived without any delay.

Bij vraagzinnen: hoe maak je duidelijk aan de leerlingen om welke zinnen het gaat. Aangezien vraagzinnen ook some kunnen bevatten.

1. In ontkennende / negatieve zinnen

2. In vraagzinnen - waarvan het antwoord 

     nog niet zeker is

     Do you have any luggage?

                          Maybe, maybe not.

Gebruik je bij: 

- Bevestigende zinnen;

- Vragen waarbij je verwacht dat het antwoord "ja" is;

- Als het een aanbod of verzoek is.

Gebruik je bij: 

- Ontkennende / Negatieve zinnen;

- Alle andere vraagzinnen.
