The Dutch sentence

Het meisje heeft een appel. De appel zit in de tas. 

--> Every sentence has a subject and a verb. 

Subject and verb are best friends! 

Articles

Het + De = The            Het meisje / De appel = The girl / The apple

Een = one / a(n)          Een meisje / Een meisje = One girl / a girl

The Dutch sentence

2 types of sentences:

- Sentences with information:

Thomas spreekt Nederlands.

- Questions:

Spreekt Thomas Nederlands?

The Dutch sentence

More than 1 verb in the sentence:

Thomas wil Nederlands spreken.

Ik ga buiten fietsen.

Mijn vriend en ik willen in Antwerpen in een restaurant eten.

Het meervoud (the plural)

Most nouns have a plural. Not all nouns.

de stoel-de stoelen
de tafel-de tafels

de avocado-de avocado's

de koffie
de melk

Most Dutch nouns that end on a consonant get -en at the end in the plural

And others get  -s in the plural: 

(Words that end with -e, -el, -en, -er, -em, -ie of -eau)
Hotel-hotels
varken-varkens

There are a few exceptions.

kind - kinderen, blad - bladeren, ei - eieren, lied - liederen

Words that get 's in plural

All words that end on a vowel (except -e, é, en -ee):

  -a: de opa – de opa’s

  -i: de taxi – de taxi’s

  -o: de auto – de auto’s

  -u: de paraplu – de paraplu’s

  -y: de baby – de baby’s

The spelling can change in plural

Boom - Bomen                                                             Brief - Brieven

Schaar - Scharen                                                        Laars - Laarzen

Been - Benen

Jas - Jassen

Rok - Rokken

Bril - Brillen

That is the same in verbs, remember?

Put the sentence in the plural

How do you do this?

1 you need to change the subject into a plural subject
2 you need to change the verb and conjugate into a plural form

De moeder leest een boek. 

De moeders lezen een boek.

Nouns get article de in the plural

Zelfstandige naamwoorden (nouns) krijgen in het meervoud (plural) “de” als lidwoord:

de jongen – de jongens

het meisje – de meisjes

het konijn - de konijnen

Important exceptions

de stad – de steden

het schip – de schepen

het dak – de daken 

de weg – de wegen

de god – de goden

Task: present your favourite hobby

1. Make a little presentation (use Word/Powerpoint) about your favourite hobby. You can choose which one! (Small presentation: 1-2 slides!)

2. Beginners: The presentation can be in English but you have to use 5 - 10 new Dutch words in your presentation.

3. Add the new words to the vocabulary list. 

4. You may try to make your presentation completely or partly in Dutch.

5. Next week you will present your favourite hobby to your classmates in small groups. You will not get a grade, it's only an exercise. 

Speaking exercise: beschrijven

• Draw and describe the person next to you. 
• Make a drawing about the classmate next to you and use Dutch words to describe him/her. Use words for the body  parts and the clothes. 
• Write a short description about your classmate.

---> You will work in pairs of 2 and we will play 2 rounds. 

• Round 1: Describe one of the pictures to another student. Help eachother by making simple Dutch sentences.
• Round 2: You will get a picture of a celebrity and your classmate will answer questions about the picture. You can only answer with 'ja' or 'nee'. Your classmate has to guess the person.
