Wat weten we al?

Topic: The overall subject of a text.
Main idea: What the author wants to say about the topic. 
Main ideas are always supported by details.
Topic sentence: The sentence that states or suggests the main idea of a passage or the entire text.

cause and effect
problem and solution

Some of these details are important. They are called major details . Other details illustrate the major details and are less important, such as examples, jokes and anecdotes. These are called minor details .

Major detail : supports the main idea of a text.
Minor detail : explains a major detail.

A fact is a statement that you can check.
You can check whether a fact is true or not. Facts do not need to be scientific. For example, the statement 'My family consists of five people' is a fact. Facts can be true or false.


An opinion is a belief or a personal view. It is what someone thinks about a subject. An opinion cannot be checked because an opinion cannot be true or false. But you can agree or disagree with someone's opinion. 

How to recognise an opinion?

It is easy to recognise an opinion when strong descriptive words such as best , worst , fantastic , awful , etc. indicate an opinion, not a fact.

However, often these clue words are not used and opinions are presented as facts. For instance:
This car is comfortable and spacious is a personal view: other people might say the car is neither comfortable nor spacious.


Facts and opinions within a single sentence
Writers often mix facts and opinions. Even within a single sentence, a writer can give you both facts and opinions. It is important that you can tell the difference.

Point of view and arguments

You cannot prove an opinion, but you can explain why you believe or think something. The reasons you give for your opinion are called arguments . 

Arguments can be facts or opinions.
