Well known facts:
  • Happens on October 31st  •
  • "Children" dress up in costumes  •
  • Trick or Treat  •
  • Pumpkin carving  •

Origin of Halloween:
  • Dates back 2000 years to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain (Sow-in)
  • The Celts lived in Ireland and the UK
  • The Christians turned Samhain in to "Halloween"
  • End of summer, celebrate harvest
  • The Celts believed that the ghosts of their ancestors visited Earth on 31st of October
  • They wore costumes to chase away the evil spirits

So what about the pumpkins?
  • The carving of pumpkins is something that actually came from the USA  •
  • In Ireland and the UK they originally carved out turnips (raap)  •
  • But pumpkins were much more spectacular than a turnip  •
  • The turnips/pumpkins are usually carved out in scary faces  •
  • The purpose is to chase away the evil spirits  •
