Modal verbs 
Modal verbs = hulpwerkwoorden 
They don't have meaning on their own. They always come with a main verb. 
They change the meaning of the verb 
        she might come tomorrow 
        she can come tomorrow

Could is a more formal and more polite way to ask permission
