Slide 1 - Slide

Does the variable have to stand for something when we write an expression/equation? explain

Slide 2 - Open question

simplify the following expression

3x +5x
A
8x2
B
8+2x
C
8
D

C
x+2

Slide 5 - Quiz

1 step equations
1 step equations are equations that, when simplified, have only 1 operation

ex: x + 3 = 5        5z = 10
        y-9 =11           n/6 = 21

Slide 6 - Slide

Solving 1 step equations
Operations are step up in pairs that work together.
Multiplication/division      Addition/Subtraction
the operations are opposites of each other, one undoes what the other does

Slide 7 - Slide

Inverse Operations
Ex. 2 x 4 = 8.... 8 / 4 = 2     division undoes multiplication and you end up with your original number

Ex. 6-4 = 2     2+4 = 6    addition undoes subtraction and you end up with your original number
Therefore these are INVERSE OPERATIONS! -Inverse operations are operations that undo each other

Slide 8 - Slide

Inverse Operations
We use inverse operations to solve 1 step equations

Slide 9 - Slide

Example: x-2 = 3
This is a GAME!
To win: always get the variable on 1 side and numbers on the other

Slide 10 - Slide

Example:   y + 5 =10

Slide 11 - Slide

Example: 2c = 265

Slide 12 - Slide

Example: u/4 =7
