Simple Past Irregular Verbs

Lesson objective

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  • Identify and use irregular simple past tense verbs to describe what the plague doctors wore and did.

  • Speak and write 1 simple sentence using irregular verbs.

Past simple tense: talks about a completed action in a time before now. It doesn't matter whether it is recent past or distant past. It doesn't matter when it got completed in the past, as long as it is completed.

  1. During covid, people used masks and hand sanitizers.

  1. This made people feel safe.

Irregular verbs

Remember

  • some verbs undergo a vowel change when they shift from present to past.

example: sleep- slept, feel-felt,

  • Some verbs change completely.

example: Think-thought, buy-bought, catch-caught, bring- brought, go-went

  • Some undergo a consonant change.

example: make-made, have-had and spend- spent, build-built (they have same vowel sounds but different consonants)

  • Some don't change at all.

example: cost-cost, put-put, cut-cut, fit-fit, set-set

  • Some maintain the same spelling, the verb remain the same in the present and past tense but the pronunciation changes.

example: read-read
