D might be chosen by some because of the use of “assimilating”. But the text doesn’t say that her name prevents her from assimilating, only that changing your name shouldn’t be necessary for assimilating. See §10: “My name – not just that of my entire paternal family – is my identity. We immigrants lose a lot when we move across seas. Our names are one of the few things we have to hold on to; giving that up shouldn’t be an implicit requirement for assimilation and to belong.”
