Historical Context
  • The rise of Irish Nationalism (Irish nationalist were Catholic): rejected British control in favor of Irish independence
  • The strong presence of Catholicism is important as it explains Eveline’s deep religious sentiments and continuous praying.
  • Eveline also revolves heavily around the position of women in 20th Century Dublin.Eveline, like her female peers, does not have the power or independence to advance in society on her own, which is why she seeks help from male figures, in this case, God and Frank.

Stream of consciousness

Stream of consciousness is a literary style in which a person's thinking processes are described. In Eveline, the narrative is dominated by descriptions of Eveline's thoughts and emotions; the most of the "action" takes place in Eveline's head.
Rather than describing a series of events, the sentences express her thoughts, emotions, and recollections of events.
The story is written as interior monologue.
