Introductie

Je gebruikt voegwoorden om zinnen of zinsdelen aan elkaar te plakken:

• She booked a ticket to Paris. She had always wanted to climb the Eiffel tower.
  
• She booked a ticket to Paris because she had always wanted to climb the Eiffel tower.

Voegwoorden: gebruik

Als je twee zinnen aan elkaar plakt, verandert de woordvolgorde niet (zoals in het Nederlands vaak wel):

He saved his money for a car because 

he wanted to buy a new one.

Hij spaarde voor een auto, omdat

hij een nieuwe wilde kopen.

Voegwoorden: functies

Voegwoorden geven het verband tussen de zinnen die ze verbinden aan. 

De meest gebruikte:

• gelijktijdigheid: as, while
• gevolg: so, so that, therefore
• keuze: or
• oorzaak: as, because, for, since
• opsomming: and
• tegenstelling: although, however, (even) though, whereas, but

as - zoals

while - hoewel / terwijl / zolang als

so that -  zodat

therefore - daarom / dus

or -  of

because -  omdat / vanwege / want

for - daar / aangezien / want

since -  sinds / aangezien

and - en

although - hoewel / ondanks dat

however - echter / daarentegen

even though - ondanks

whereas - hoewel / terwijl

but - maar
