They lived in a large house, next to a garden where rich and diverse fruits and vegetables grew. The woman used to stand at the window and watch the garden. She longed only for young rapunzel. She sent her husband to pick it for her, to fulfill her pregnancy craving.
But the owner of the garden was a wicked witch. Therefore, the husband dared not to go to her and ask for a bit of rapunzel. Instead of asking, he decided to steal rapunzel from the witch's garden, but as soon as he stepped inside, he heard grumbling and murmuring. It was the witch. She started yelling at the poor man, asking him how dare he steal from her garden? The man knelt before the witch and begged for mercy, for he was stealing rapunzel for his pregnant wife. The witch was very wicked, so she agreed only to exchange. In exchange for the stolen rapunzel, he would have to give her his firstborn child. The man had no choice but to agree.
The woman soon gave birth to a daughter, and the wicked witch immediately took her away.
The girl grew into a beautiful young woman, with beautiful golden hair. That's why everyone called her Rapunzel. The witch hid her in a tall tower at the end of a deep forest, so no one knew what happened to the girl. No one could reach her because the tall tower had no stairs. All it had was a small window at the top of the tower, where the beautiful girl would occasionally appear.
The witch came to her every day, and she would climb up to the room at the top of the tower by letting down her hair, which the witch would climb. As Rapunzel grew up in solitude, she knew no one else but the wicked witch. She passed her time by singing, which one day a prince passing by heard. He hid in the bushes and saw the witch calling Rapunzel to let down her hair so he could climb up. The prince thought he would do the same, so once when the witch wasn't there, he called Rapunzel in the same way. He climbed up to her room and entered. Rapunzel was terribly scared when she saw him. She had never seen anyone else but the witch, especially not such a handsome young man. He told her not to be afraid. Rapunzel and the prince fell in love with each other.
The prince and Rapunzel secretly met, so the witch wouldn't find out and get angry. The witch came every day and suspected nothing until one time Rapunzel said how much heavier the witch was compared to the prince while climbing up. The witch flew into a rage when she heard that. She started yelling at Rapunzel and called her an ungrateful brat. She claimed she saved her and kept her safe from the rest of the world, and that's how she repays her. In anger, she grabbed her hair and cut it in one stroke. Thus, the witch condemned Rapunzel to eternal solitude, as no one else could climb up the tower.
The witch decided to take revenge on the prince. She waited to call Rapunzel down, then let down her cut hair. When the prince climbed up, he was surprised to see an ugly witch at the window. She let down the hair, and the prince plummeted from the tower. He fell into the bushes and was blinded.
The blind prince, unhappy without his love, wandered the world looking for Rapunzel. He went from town to town, from village to village, traversed all meadows and forests. Along the way, he only ate berries and drank water from the river. When he reached the edge of the forest, he sat on a log, helpless and miserable, and wept.
