Human life is divided into a number of phases

         profound changes    

         enters a new phase of life

Limits of each stage = age limits

Developmental fields

• Children/people develop 

      at their own pace.

• Children develop in 

      different areas.

We can divide the fields 

into three broad groups:

• physical development
• cognitive development
• socio-emotional development

We focus on physical development.

Physical development

              four categories:

• physical development (=growth)
• sensory development
• motor development
• sensory-motor development

Motor development

we distinguish:

• gross motor skills
• fine motor skills

Sensory development

Development of the senses

Sensory-motor development

Motor and sensory development cannot be seperated.

This is the ability to coordinate sensory stimuli and movements.
