Questions on Writing Style

Answer the following questions using full sentences, providing evidence when possible. 

Choose any three pages. How many lines does Hersey spend on each character?

The text is rich in imagery. Find several examples and add them below, with an explanation for each one.

Find at least FIVE examples of metaphors and or similes, list and explain them.

Find any page with a powerful or emotional event on it (but not page 1) and examine the sentence structure.

Does he write mostly short simple sentences or long complex ones. Why?

Describe the author's overall writing style. Use examples from the text.

Describe how the narrator talks about the events. Is it emotional? Give examples.

Can you see any emotion shown in the text? How?

1. Write original sentences that show you understand the meaning, using the words on pg 30 (pdf). 
2. Select 20 of the  bold and underlined words in the text. Write your own sentence using them correctly showing you know the meaning of the word. .
3. Write down 10 other words from this piece that were new to you. Note the page number and write an original sentence showing you know the meaning of the word.

The Summative Assessment

(for this assessment you will receive a grade)

Your assignment is to write a pastiche of Hiroshima called “A day in the life of the 

Haarlemmermeer Lyceum”.

A pastiche is an imitation of another work, which copies all aspects of the work except one. 

It is the opposite of a parody, for two major reasons: 

1.A parody is meant to be humorous by making fun of something, by exaggerating one or more aspects of the original. 

2.A pastiche may or may not be humorous; it tries to imitate as closely as possible the original, maintaining the elements it does not change, while changing only one or two things.

What exactly do I have to do? 

Your task is to record “a day in the life of the Haarlemmermeer Lyceum” in exactly the same style as John Hersey does in Hiroshima, mimicking his writing style and use of language. In particular, the way he intertwines the stories of the different people, following a chronological order and telling what people are doing at each time, rather than first telling one person‟s entire story, then the other's. To do this, you must interview 4 students, each student in a different year, (2 lower form and two upper form and one teacher/staff member, about their day, from the time they woke up until the end of that day.

Practicalities

Interviews should be live, via video (Teams, Skype, Whatsapp video, etc.) as this goes faster.  The interviews should be about the same day, but if this is not practical, write it up as if it is. Interview people about the day before the interview, so things are fairly fresh. The day should be a school day. Form groups of four to interview a teacher.  Your English teacher will help you to find a teacher to interview. 

Each one of the 4 students should be in a different year.  You may interview a classmate.  You may interview your own brother or sister, but you may not interview a classmate and their brother or sister.    

Writing up the day

Remember to mimick Hersey's way of writing. Use time to decide when to switch to another person and when to come back, so that we get to see what people were doing at the same time. It doesn't always have to be balanced. At 11:00 you may have a lot to say for one person, but not so much for another. As long as it balances out in the end, it doesn't matter. The important thing is to make it sound like Hersey.  

Length

There is no maximum length, but there is a minimum length of 800 words.  If you have written 800 words and you have only reached up to 12:00, you can end your piece there, providing you feel your piece accurately copies Hersey and gives a good view of what your 5 people were doing in the morning, that there are switches back and forth between them.  You do not have to use all the information or go up until bedtime, but you should begin and end for everyone at around the same time.  

Formalities

• Submit your final document to Magister in PDF format, using Arial, Calibri or Verdana fonts, size 12 and 1.5 line spacing. 
• Your piece will be checked in Magister for plagiarism and collusion. 
• DUE DATE IS : May 27th 17:00 (Due today is not do today)
