where they settle, foreign migrants are immigrants.

Many international migrants stay close

Country with the same language

Country with shared history.

Why do people migrate? Perspective/dimension

Economic reasons: labor migrants (largest group), international students. 

Social reasons: family migrants (family formation and family reunification). 

Ecological reasons (natural disasters). 

Political reasons: refugees.

The Nederlands: Migrants

1. Colonial migrants.

2. Guest /Labour workers - 'temporary' from the Mediterranean region.

3. Refugees.

4. Labor migrants from Eastern Europe (mainly after 2004).

5. Knowledge workers (Expats among others) > highly educated.

Different generations

Children of guest workers from Turkey and Morocco were born in the Netherlands; these children are referred to as the second generation. Grandchildren are referred to as the third generation.

Impact  migration

1. Multicultural society

2. Concentration of immigrants in various city districts.

3. Labor migrants do work that others do not want/cannot do.

4. The Netherlands follows EU policy.

5. Integration policy (civic integration requirement)

6. Political discussions.

Net migration + 

In 2024, approximately 314,000 people immigrated to the Netherlands, while 205,000 people emigrated.
