Slide 16 - Diapositive

When talking about the future we use

Present simple: Tomorrow, school starts at 8.10 a.m.
or
Present continuous: Tomorrow, I am having a doctor's appointment.
or
Future simple: I will help you with that tomorrow.
or
be going to + inf.: I am going to help you with that tomorrow.

Slide 17 - Diapositive

We use the present simple with
Timetables, schedules and programmes (fixed times)

The shop opens tomorrow at 9.00
The train leaves at 8.15 tomorrow.
Next week, the new Avatar film starts at 19.30 p.m.
Etc.

Slide 18 - Diapositive

We use the present continuous with
Fixed arrangements/appointments (time/date/place)

Rutte is meeting Biden at the Whitehouse today at 11.30 a.m.
I am leaving for Spain tomorrow.
They are visiting the dentist next week Thurday.
Etc.

Slide 19 - Diapositive

We use the future simple with
A. spontaneous decisions (moment of speaking):
That cake looks wonderful, I will have some.
Don't worry, I will help with that in a minute.
or
B. prediction of the future based on opinion or experience:
I don't think the Dutch football team will ever win the world championship.
I am sure Peter will graduate this year.

Slide 20 - Diapositive

What about shall?
In general: with I and we you can use shall instead of will.

You MUST use shall with I or we when you offer or suggest something to somebody:
Shall I pour you a cup of tea?
Shall we go to the cinema tonight?
Shall we have Thai for dinner this evening?
Just for
      I
     +
   We

Slide 21 - Diapositive

We use the be going to + infinitive with
A. future intention
This afternoon I am going to shop for clothes with my friends.
I am going to study really hard for my next English test.

B. prediction of the future based on present evidence:
Look at those clouds! It is going to rain soon.
Look at these questions. I am sure I am going to fail this test!

Slide 22 - Diapositive

Last but not least...
We use the Present Simple after the following words:

As soon as dad arrives, we will eat.
Before you leave, please remember to water the plants.
When you see hem, don't forget to give him this message.
if, when,
as soon as,
unless,
