Linking words

• We use linking words to combine two sentences.
• Examples of linking words: and, but, because.
  
• Each linking word has a different function.
• The linking word shows you how the two sentences relate to each other.

Linking word 'because'

• 'because'  = adds a reason

• Kate was happy because she won the competition. = Katy was blij omdat ze de wedstrijd won.

Linking word 'and'

• 'and'  = adds additional information

• My mom and dad are teachers. = Mijn moeder en vader zijn docenten.

Linking word 'but'

• 'but'  = adds a different idea/ shows a difference or contrast

• He went to the shops but he didn't buy anything. = Hij ging naar de winkels, maar hij kocht niets.
