What is a theme?

A theme is a central idea or message that is explored throughout a literary work, such as a novel, poem, or film. It can be a moral lesson, a question, or an observation about human nature or the world in general. A theme is usually not explicitly stated, but rather inferred by the reader or viewer through the characters, plot, and setting of the work.

For example, in the classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, one of the main themes is the importance of empathy and understanding others' perspectives. This theme is demonstrated through the character Atticus Finch, who teaches his children to consider things from others' points of view before passing judgment.

Exercise: The theme of a story
Read the three short stories provided below( you may find them for free on the internet). As you read, try to identify the main theme in each story.
Story 1: The Tortoise and the Hare
Aesop's fable about a race between a slow and steady tortoise and a fast but overconfident hare.

Story 2: The Gift of the Magi
A short story by O. Henry about a young couple who, despite their poverty, find a way to buy meaningful Christmas gifts for each other by sacrificing their most prized possessions.

Story 3: The Necklace
A short story by Guy de Maupassant about a woman who borrows a beautiful necklace from a friend for a party, only to lose it and go through great lengths to replace it.
After reading each story, write down the main theme you think the author is trying to convey in each story. Remember that a theme is a central idea or message that is explored throughout the work. You may find it helpful to consider the characters, plot, and setting when identifying the theme.
