Prepositions

Prepositions (voorzetsels) zijn woorden zoals on, in, at, for, from, into, between, after.

Ze worden veel gebruikt in het Engels.

Hetzelfde geldt voor het Nederlands. 

Denk bijvoorbeeld aan: bij, van, aan, voor, met, in, op.

Het Engels bevat zo’n 150 voorzetsels. Vele ervan hebben meerdere betekenissen, zoals ‘at’:

Don’t shout at me! (tegen)

I’ll see you at seven o’clock. (om)

I saw him at the railway station. (op)

I met her at the bus stop. (bij)

I’m really good at this. (in)

Een aantal voorzetsels is makkelijker te onthouden als je ze aan een thema koppelt.

Vaste voorzetsels

In veel uitdrukkingen worden vaste voorzetsels gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld: by mistake (per ongeluk), out of fashion (uit de mode), on foot (te voet), by bus (met de bus).

Ook werkwoorden hebben in een bepaalde betekenis vaak een vast voorzetsel. Bijvoorbeeld: to apply for (solliciteren naar), to divide by three (door drie delen).

Vaste voorzetsels uitdrukkingen

• in my opinion (naar mijn mening)
• at the same time (tegelijk, tegelijkertijd)
• in memory of (ter nagedachtenis aan)
• lack of (gebrek aan)
• need for (behoefte aan)
• with regard to (met betrekking tot)
• on average (gemiddeld)

In het Engels is de regel:

In het Engels is de regel: 

under = er is direct iets onder het object

below = onder in de zin van op een lager niveau.
