In augustus 1990 valt Irak buurland Koeweit aan en bezet het. Als duidelijk wordt dat de Iraakse dictator Saddam Hoessein zich niet wil terugtrekken, valt een internationale troepenmacht o.l.v. de Verenigde Staten, in januari 1991, Irak aan. 
Operatie Desert Storm is een groot militair succes, hoewel Saddam Hoessein de macht in Irak behoudt. Het land is echter enorm verzwakt en de bevolking heeft het zwaar onder de economische sancties van het Westen.
