Today's Lesson
Huiswerk bespreken - paragraaf 8.3

Uitleg 8.4 & 8.5

Zelfstandig werken aan de opdrachten.

Slide 2 - Diapositive

I want you to check all the locks in the house.
  1. lijdend voorwerp (all the locks in the house) wordt onderwerp.
  2. je krijgt een vorm van 'to be' + voltooid deelwoord (checked)
  3. 'to be' neemt de vorm over van het werkwoord: 'to check' = infintief met 'to' -> dus 'to be'
I want alle the locks in the house to be checked.

Slide 3 - Diapositive

They forced him to stay.

We expect you to pay attention.

They haven't allowed him to make a phone call.
He was forced to stay.

You are expected to pay attention.

He has not been allowed to make a phone call.

Slide 4 - Diapositive

I hate other people telling me what to do.

I hate being told what to do (by other people).

Slide 5 - Diapositive

I hate other people telling my kids how to behave.

I am going to have somebody check my car.

We're having someone paint our house.
I hate my kids being told how to behave.

I am going to have my car checked.

We're having our house painted.

Slide 6 - Diapositive

They explained it to her.
It was explained to her.
'It' wordt onderwerp in de passive. Maar hoe moet het dan in de volgende zin?

They explained to her that she was wrong.

Strikt genomen zou dat moeten worden: That she was wrong was explained to her.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

They explained to her that she was wrong.

They suggested that we should inform the police.

They have claimed that she has often stolen money from them.
It was explained to her that she was wrong.

It was suggested that we should inform the police.

It has been claimed that she has often stolen money from them.

Slide 8 - Diapositive

twee passives mogelijk

Many people believe that she is behind all this.
It is believed that she is behind all of this.
She is believed to be behind all of this.

Many people knew that he was still in prison.
It was known that he was still in prison.
He was known to be still in prison.

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Present & Past Perfect
 'to have + voltooid deelwoord'

They say that he has wasted all his money on horses.
It is said that he has wasted all his money on horses.
He is said to have wasted all his money on horses.

Many people knew he had been in prison once.
It was known that he had been in prison once.
He was known to have been in prison once.

Slide 10 - Diapositive

It is said that...

It is assumed that...

It has been claimed that...
Er wordt gezegd dat...

Er wordt aangenomen dat...

Er is beweerd dat...

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Er - in het Nederlands
At least sixty people have been fired.
Er zijn minstens zestig mensen ontslagen (geworden).
A new mayor was appointed last week.

is ... benoemd (benoemd = hoofdwerkwoord)

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Er - in het Nederlands
'Er' kan wel 'there' zijn als het hoofdwerkwoord van de zin een vorm van 'to be' is.

There must be someone who can help us.

There is someone here to see you.
Maar: Someone is here to see you. kan ook.

Slide 13 - Diapositive

There was an angry response.
We/they are working on it.

There was a knock at the door.
Er werd op de deur geklopt.
Dus niet: There was knocked at the door.
